Daily Brief — October 09, 2026

Brent crude rose above $105 a barrel on reports President Trump is weighing a resumption of "major combat operations" in Iran, as Strait of Hormuz oil flows fell more than 25% amid intensifying tanker attacks.

Washington drafting strike options on Iran while Hormuz flows fall more than a quarter has pushed Brent above $105 and set the price of energy for every importing economy. That shock is now being priced through the discount rate — a 30-year auction tailed a second straight time at 5.618% and tech led a second session of losses.

Geopolitics

[Iran / Hormuz] — Brent rose above $105 after reports that Trump is weighing a resumption of "major combat operations" and the White House asked the Pentagon to draft strike options usable before the midterms. Strait of Hormuz oil flows fell more than 25% as Iran widened tanker attacks beyond the strait's narrow confines, and Saudi Arabia is now negotiating long-term contracts for loadings outside Hormuz. Tehran said it is still reviewing US views on its seven-day proposal and will respond within days.

[Russia / Ukraine] — A Russian bomb killed 33 people on a street in an eastern Ukrainian stronghold, with Zelenskiy saying strikes killed more than 70 in two days. Ukraine struck Gazprom Neftekhim Salavat and set the Omsk refinery ablaze, and hit a data center for the first time in the war. Negotiators meet US envoys Witkoff and Kushner in Miami on Friday, even as Treasury eased some Russia sanctions through January 9.

[Global Conflicts] — Houthi forces struck Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport with two ballistic missiles, killing three people in the war's deadliest attack on Saudi Arabia, with shrapnel falling on the city after intercepts. Lufthansa, Air India and other Indian carriers suspended flights to Riyadh, and Syria signaled it may assist in the Yemen war.

Macroeconomics

[Fed / US Monetary Policy] — Waller said more hikes are needed to return inflation to 2%, though not at consecutive meetings, and Musalem said "more monetary policy firming will be required," with Waller citing AI development and energy as persistent inflation drivers. Kalshi traders still price an 84% chance of a hold on October 28 against 16% for a hike. The Fed separately hit American Express with a money-laundering enforcement action carrying a $350 million OCC penalty.

[US Fiscal / Debt / Credit] — The federal deficit rose 12% to nearly $2 trillion in fiscal 2026, the highest since 2021, and CBO Director Swagel said stabilizing debt-to-GDP would require 5–6% real growth that he judges unlikely. Treasury's buyback accepted $6 billion of $14.886 billion offered, underscoring how little the operation changes the trajectory.

Markets

[US Indices] — The S&P 500 fell 0.45% to 7,766.71 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.23% to 27,201.31 in a second straight loss, while the Dow added 47 points; more than $500 billion of market value was erased. Crude above $105 and an OpenAI annualised revenue figure about $20 billion below prior guidance drove the move, and JPMorgan warned 30-year yields now threaten small- and mid-caps.

[Bonds / Yields] — The US 30-year sale priced at a 5.618% high yield with a 0.1 basis point tail — a second consecutive tail — while UK 20-year gilt yields reached 6% for the first time since March 1998 and Italy's 10-year rose 10bp to 4.747%, the highest since November 2023. France's debt is now riskier than 38% of its own companies' bonds.

AI

[AI Model Releases] — OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6.1 Ultra fast across its API, Codex and ChatGPT Work, while Microsoft said its 137-billion-parameter MAI-Code-1.1 Flash can now run on-device, moving a model of that size outside the data centre. Google's Nano Banana 2.1 took fourth place on both Artificial Analysis image-generation and image-editing leaderboards at half the price of Nano Banana 2.

[AI Compute / Infrastructure] — Nvidia-backed Firmus cut its IPO price 25% and then pulled the listing as investors balked at the valuation, while SoftBank is seeking $100 billion from Gulf investors and credit insurance on AI-related debt is repricing. Lumentum said its optoelectronic parts are "completely sold out" through almost 2029, and a drone attack halted Yandex data centre operations in Russia's Ryazan region.

[Open Weights] — Step 5 Preview is now free in Cline and scores ahead of Kimi K3 and GLM-5.3 on DeepSWE, placing it among the strongest open-weight coding models currently available. Open-weight releases are now contesting the benchmark closed labs use to sell coding agents, at zero licence cost.

[AI Policy / Safety] — The FCC will vote on banning all Chinese labs from testing US electronics, a constraint on who can certify hardware for the US market. OpenAI banned covert influence operations tied to Russia and Iran, saying Russian accounts used ChatGPT to target Latin America and Iranian operatives placed articles critical of the US war with Iran in multiple US outlets.

Crypto

[Bitcoin] — Bitcoin broke below $81,000 on Thursday, wiping out more than $400 million of leveraged long positions within 60 minutes before trading back near $82,282. The US government moved over $1 billion of Bitcoin seized from the Bitfinex hack to an unknown wallet, adding a supply overhang on top of the forced selling.
