Daily Brief — September 24, 2026

Chinese President Xi Jinping departed Beijing for Washington ahead of his September 24 summit with President Donald Trump.

The day’s central shift is a hawkish Fed repricing, pushing US yields to multi-decade highs while AI moves from model releases to infrastructure, governance and mass adoption. That combination puts the durability of the AI-led market rally, energy-stressed consumers and geopolitical bargaining over Hormuz and Ukraine all under tighter financial pressure.

Geopolitics

Iran / Hormuz — Iranian and US officials held rare Qatar-mediated talks on the Strait of Hormuz in New York, with Trump saying the talks were good but warning he could annihilate Iran if no deal is reached. A cargo vessel in the strait was struck by an unknown projectile, caught fire and was left adrift, while only three commodity vessels transited Tuesday. Iran’s security chief said Hormuz will not be reopened until Tehran’s conditions are met, keeping any reopening precarious.

Russia / Ukraine — Zelenskiy asked Trump for a winter arms package and discussed an energy ceasefire, while also warning that Russia is planning a new mass attack. Rubio said both Russia and Ukraine have expressed interest in a limited grain and energy ceasefire, and is scheduled to meet Lavrov on Wednesday. The Kremlin said conditions for peace negotiations are not ready and that a Putin-Zelenskiy meeting could occur only in Moscow.

China / Taiwan — Xi departed Beijing for Washington ahead of his September 24 summit with Trump, while China’s ambassador warned that Beijing has red lines on Taiwan, human rights and other issues. General Motors CEO Mary Barra is set to attend Trump’s state dinner for Xi, while US investment concerns have stalled plans for a comparable Chinese business delegation. Taiwan said it will maintain close contact with the United States on arms sales.

Macroeconomics

Fed / US Monetary Policy — Fed Governor Barr said further rate hikes will likely be needed, citing upward price pressures from the AI boom, tariffs and energy, and odds of an October hike rose to 64%. The 10-year Treasury yield jumped 17 basis points and the dollar reached a two-month high as markets moved more hawkish. Kevin Hassett publicly questioned the hike and said Chair Kevin Warsh is running an “unusually partisan” Fed.

BOJ / Japan — Japan’s 10-year JGB yield jumped as much as 10 basis points to 3.07%, its highest level since September 1996, while the 5-year yield climbed to a record 2.365%. The 30-year yield rose to 4.125%, showing pressure across the curve after Japan’s latest rate hike. USD/JPY approached 160, reviving yen-intervention risk.

Markets

US Indices — After a second straight Nasdaq record close, the Nasdaq fell 1.18%, the S&P 500 fell 0.80% and the Dow fell 0.69%, wiping out more than $300 billion in US equity value intraday. Alphabet and Amazon pulled the market lower as the 10-year Treasury yield jumped back above 5%. The market recorded a seventh consecutive session with more 52-week lows than highs.

Bonds / Yields — The 10-year Treasury yield rose to 5.05%, its highest level since July 2007, after strong S&P Global US PMI gauges, while the 30-year yield reached 5.367%. The 2-year yield climbed to 4.84%, a year’s high, and 3- and 5-year yields rose about 10 basis points. Bessent tripled the target size for a long-dated buyback to $6 billion, but yields still showed bond-market stress.

AI

AI Model Releases — Claude Opus 5.5 became the new number one on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index, with gains across all three evaluations but a higher cost per task. Google launched Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS, which ranked first on the Pronunciation Robustness benchmark at 89.5%. Eleven new frontier points on the intelligence-versus-cost Pareto frontier show the race shifting toward both capability and efficiency.

AI Compute / Infrastructure — Anthropic is in early talks to lease up to 1 gigawatt of data-center capacity from Stream Data Centers, which is majority-owned by Apollo Global, while seeking greater control of data centers. SB Energy delayed its IPO funding an 8-gigawatt data-center project amid investor revolt. Loans tied to OpenAI’s 4.5-gigawatt Stargate Project Jupiter are trading below 90, showing strain in compute financing.

AI Policy / Safety — OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei took AI-risk warnings to the UN Security Council, with Altman promoting common global safety standards while resisting restrictions that would slow development. Bernie Sanders unveiled a bill to ban artificial superintelligence and create a Department of AI. China opened a data-security probe into DeepSeek and Moonshot AI after Anthropic’s accusations.

AI Products / Adoption — Meta’s Muse topped app charts as Zuckerberg announced retail and productivity integrations, smart-glasses support, camera-free models and a palm-sized 5G Muse keychain device. Amazon launched an agentic AI assistant for third-party sellers built on Anthropic’s Claude. OpenAI expanded ChatGPT Voice with access to email, calendar, Slack and other plugins, powered by GPT-6 variants.

Crypto

Crypto Regulatory / Institutional — Canada’s six biggest banks launched a joint tokenized-deposits project to enable 24/7 blockchain-based payments. NYSE signed a deal with Blockchain.com to bring tokenized US stocks to 44 million crypto accounts. CFTC Chair Mike Selig said the agency is preparing clear crypto market-structure rules for onchain systems, mass tokenization, 24/7 trading and agentic finance.
