US forces seized three tankers carrying almost 6 million barrels of Iranian crude worth nearly $600 million in the Atlantic, sending Brent and US crude up $3 a barrel as Tehran threatened new fronts in the Indian Ocean and at Bab el-Mandeb.

US forces seized three tankers carrying almost 6 million barrels of Iranian crude as Tehran threatened new fronts in the Indian Ocean and at Bab el-Mandeb, pushing Brent above $105 with only 10 commodity vessels transiting Hormuz on Wednesday. A physical supply squeeze now colliding with a Fed openly discussing another hike leaves the pre-election window exposed to energy-driven inflation and tightening financial conditions at once.

Geopolitics

Iran / Hormuz — US forces seized three tankers holding almost 6 million barrels of Iranian crude worth nearly $600 million, as Supreme Leader adviser Yahya Rahim Safavi warned the next phase could reach the Indian Ocean and Security Council Secretary Rezaei said a US escalation could open a second front at Bab el-Mandeb. Brent and US crude rose $3 a barrel and European gas climbed as all Iranian flights to the UAE were cancelled and the UAE barred Iranian carriers from Thursday.

China / Taiwan — The US and China extended the Busan trade truce by two months, pushing expiry from November 10 into January 2027, as Trump greeted Xi at Joint Base Andrews for the first state visit in eleven years. Xi said the "historical logic of peaceful coexistence" has not changed, but China's defence ministry urged "extreme caution" over arms sales to Taiwan and NBC reported Trump will decide shortly on a new Taiwan arms package.

Every Fed voice on the tape pushed the same way, hardening the tightening bias into the pre-election window rather than stepping back from September's move.

BOJ / Japan — Japan's 10-year government bond yield rose 4 basis points to 3.115%, the highest since September 1996, with the 30-year at 4.210% and the 5-year at a record 2.400%, after a rate hike made under pressure from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The yen slid to 158.98 per dollar, its weakest since September 2, as Tokyo repeated intervention warnings without acting.
